Selection Case Study
The Client
A large company are recruiting new staff for new premises opening in a nearby town. The company requires one manager and two sales staff.
The Assessment
The company has already selected five people from the CV’s and applications they received. Richard is tasked with the job to find the individual who would most suit the managerial role, as well as two other members of staff who would work together to form an efficient team. Richard tests all five individuals with a well validated and reliable psychometric test measuring ability of verbal reasoning and numerical analysis. Each individual takes approximately 30 minutes to complete the ability test. Following this, each candidate completes a psychometric test which measures personality, in particular, one that establishes if the candidate has good team-working and managerial skills.
Following the testing, each individual has a meeting with board of directors, meanwhile Richard analyses the results and types a feedback report for each individual. Each individual then receives in-depth feedback on the results of the tests they completed.
How it helped
The company was able to use psychometric tests to help them make decisions about the candidates. One candidate had a very good application and was very good in the interview. However, his personality test showed that he wouldn’t necessarily make a good manager because he was unable to separate personal friendships from managing individuals. Consequently, he was hired as one of the sales staff. The candidate that was hired as manager showed as having excellent verbal reasoning with a personality that combined interpersonal relationships, but a need to achieve good results. By employing psychometric tests in this way and combining the results with that of the application process and interviews, the board were able to make more informed decisions about the candidates that they hired.
Personal Guidance Case Study
The Client
An individual reports that they are struggling with work. They find themselves very restless, and they get very frustrated with themselves as they know that they are not working to their full potential. They mention that the politics in the company in which they work are not great, and there are often minor arguments between colleagues.
The Assessment
A personality test was used to examine how the individual conducted themselves in the workplace and it revealed some interesting results. Although she didn’t realise it, the arguments between other colleagues were affecting the way that she worked. The results showed that she was high in tender-mindedness and empathy, so when an argument occurred, she often was one of the first to try and alleviate the problem. She also spent time worrying about the social problems in the workplace and this was making her restless. This led to her becoming less efficient at work and more stressed when under pressure to complete a project.
How it helped
After understanding how she reacted to social problems in the workplace, the individual was able consciously control her behavior and avoid becoming the middleman in disagreements in the office. Although she was still empathetic to some individuals, she consciously made the effort to put worries out of her mind during work, and tried to deal with it after work by going for coffee with the upset colleague. This allowed her to separate her ‘work’ and ‘interpersonal’ self and therefore reduce the impact of her interpersonal feelings on her work efficiency.
