Tennis Case Study

Background

'Lucy’ is a County level tennis player and has been playing at County level for three years. This year, she got very close to being selected for a National training camp, however, the talent scout said that she just lost out to another girl whose service game was superb.

The Programme

Lucy plays tennis to a very high level, but is so keen to be selected for the national squad she went to see Richard to see if he could help improve her game. After consultation, Richard helped Lucy construct a mental training plan which helped her identify what type of cognitive strategy she may benefit from using in her tennis game.
After discussing how to introduce the cognitive strategy into Lucy’s game, a programme was constructed. Lucy was asked to record how much she used the strategy throughout the game, and reflect on how successful she thought it may have been.
After a couple of alterations made throughout the mid-season, Lucy found that the programme was benefiting her game. She was able to focus throughout the whole match, and found that the slips of concentration leading to unforced errors such as double faults were disappearing from her game. Lucy now believes that next year she has a much better chance at making the national squad.
