Case Study: SwimmingBackground
'Angie' goes swimming every morning and competes in gala events. She has been swimming for around three years and is still really enjoying it.
The Problem
Angie has been suffering a number of injuries recently. First of all she pulled a muscle in her back which put her out for five weeks and then she pulled a leg muscle during her rehabilitation. After chatting with Angie, it was discovered that she is very highly motivated, but sets goals that are unrealistic. She often pushed herself too hard to complete a certain number of lengths in a certain timeframe, or to shave a second or two off her distance time. This pushing of her abilities has actually led to her injuries. However, during rehabilitation she has not adjusted her goals to take her previous injury into account. This is an example of unsuitable goal setting.
The Solution
Angie was informed about strategies to aid her in her goal setting. Using a number of simple techniques and a record diary, Angie was able to construct a 2 month training plan, with appropriate short term goals for each week and a long term goal for the end of the two months. For a multi-discipline intervention, Head for a Win consulted with local exercise professionals to help Angie select appropriate targets for her swimming. Angie now uses her record diary every day, taking notes of her times and distances, which has really helped direct her motivation and get the most out of her swimming performance.
